Situated just above The Arctic Circle, Bodø offers students the opportunity to experience the natural wonders of the North, including the midnight sun and The Northern Lights. Another major attraction located just outside the city and about 30 minutes' bus ride from the university campus is the world's strongest malstrom: Saltstraumen.
As the largest city in the county of Nordland and second largest city in the whole of Northern Norway, Bodø (approximately 49.000 inhabitants in 2012) also provides an urban setting with diverse shops, pubs and clubs as well a vibrant cultural experience supported by the many galleries, concert venues and museums located in and around the city.
A major new cultural precinct "The Storm" including a large concert hall and a state-of-the-art library are at present being built in the city centre. Official opening of "The Storm" will coincide with the city's 200th anniversary in 2014.
Travelling to, from, and around Bodø is easy with the international airport, train station and various buses and ferries all within close proximity of the city centre. This provides students with the opportunity to travel further into Norway, Scandinavia or Europe.
