Content

​The course introduces students to academic research and writing.  It covers the following topics:

  • Resource evaluation
  • Critical reading and note-taking
  • Essay writing
  • Referencing
  • Plagiarism
Learning outcomes​
Upon completion students should:
 
Knowledge
  • Have gained knowledge about academic integrity, writing style, structure and grammar, different referencing styles and avoidance of plagiarism.
  • Have gained knowledge about essay structure and writing academically.
Understanding
  • Understand the importance of critical evaluation of research resources especially in relation to the Internet.
  • Understand the value of critical reading and proper note-taking for good essay writing
  • Understand the concept of academic integrity and transparency in research and how to avoid plagiarism
Skills
  • Be able to evaluate possible sources, including assessing whether a source is academic and/or reliable and relevant
  • Be able to read a short text critically and take notes in their own words
  • Have acquired basic skills in academic writing structure and style
  • Use a style guide to reference sources in a transparent way
Recommended previous knowledge ​None.
Teaching mode ​Face to face
Learning activities and teaching methods ​Lecture and workshop including textual analysis and discussion.
Recommended reading/materials ​A reading list of two short newspaper articles and one student work will be distributed in the week prior to the course.  Students should bring a pen and paper or a laptop with them to the course.
